Ledum-leaved Aetheolaena (Aetheolaena ledifolia)
This species is in fact known only by the material that was collected in 1802 by Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland somewhere in Ecuador.
The species was never found again since and is now most likely extinct.

Pichincha Aetheolaena (Aetheolaena pichinchensis)
This species is known from the type material which was collected in 1864 at the slopes of the Pichincha Volcano near Quito, the capital of Ecuador.
The species was not found since and appears to be extinct.

White Aetheolaena (Aetheolaena hypoleuca)
This species is known only from the type material that was collected in 1851 in an unknown locality in the Pichincha Province of Ecuador.
The species was never recorded since and is believed to be extinct.
