Plesiorycteropus germainepetterae MacPhee

Petter’s Bibymalagasy (Plesiorycteropus germainepetterae)

This species was described in 1994; it is known from several rather fragmentary subfossil remains.

The species reached the size of a small dog and was adapted to scratch-digging by using the claws on its forelegs; it is believed to have been specialized to feeding on ants and termites.

Petter’s Bibymalagasy disappeared sometimes about 1000 years ago, probably due to direct hunting but probably also due to the destruction of its habitat.
